Maria, what characterizes your leadership?
Clarity, openness, respect, and joy.
Can you elaborate on what this means and how you have changed the culture at Gothenburg RoRo Terminal with the help of these guiding principles?
This has increased the well-being and the feeling of making a difference among the employees. It becomes easy to know what goals apply and how to achieve them. Short-term sick leave has decreased significantly, which has had an effect both on well-being and on the bottom line in the income statement.
What other positive effects have you contributed to in the Port of Gothenburg?
We are part of a chain, and cooperation between the operators is important. For example, we have a Border Inspection Point where all goods subject to notification to the Swedish Board of Agriculture, the National Food Agency, the Swedish Board of Plant Quarantine, and the Swedish Customs Service are inspected. We have one in the port and are in the process of establishing a new one that is better adapted. Gothenburg RoRo Terminal has been a driving force in this because we have a lot of goods subject to inspection. We are the only operator with daily traffic to England. Furthermore, the number of workplace accidents has decreased.
What do you see that you still have to do to achieve your goals as a leader in the Port of Gothenburg?
Lots - we are only at the beginning of the journey - but within three years, every employee should feel that they are invaluable and can make a significant difference in the Port of Gothenburg.
Sustainability is not just about the environment but also the work environment. We collaborate with several major vehicle manufacturers to find more environmentally friendly vehicles and to enable ships to use "shore power."
Furthermore, we are a test site for new solutions for sustainable equipment for port terminals. We have already removed the majority of diesel-powered vehicles, but we have heavy goods, which presents a challenge for the manufacturers. We must be able to pull up to 90 tons up a 12-degree ramp - that is the biggest challenge.
